Bridging projects are aimed at scientists who carry out independent research and, as members of the scientific staff and integrated W2 professorships, sometimes do not have the basic material and personnel resources beyond their own position and finance their research predominantly through acquired third-party funds. It is intended to prevent precarious situations from arising in the absence of expected funding, in which personnel positions cannot be extended or even the entire independent research is endangered.
