The article presents syntactic change, specifically word order change, from an evolutionary, constructional perspective. I first discuss the general question as to what is syntactic change, and sketch a prototypical and simplified scenario of language change. Thereafter, word order changes are considered from this evolutionary, constructional perspective, and a competition scenario is illustrated. A note on the distinction between the individual language user and the speech community reinforces the central concept throughout the article, namely that the dynamic connection between generalizations and utterances are central in our understanding of syntactic change.
