Abstract

This paper presents a systematic evaluation of 103 series-produced microchannel-plate photomultiplier tubes (MCP-PMTs) for the PANDA Barrel DIRC detector at the FAIR facility. The performance of these sensors was assessed in terms of detective quantum efficiency, gain, rate capability, dark count rate, afterpulsing, and time resolution. While most sensors demonstrated good performance, issues such as gain uniformity, rate capability, and escalation mode were observed in some tubes. The rate capability was studied in detail, revealing variations among the sensors regarding the influence of MCP resistance, local and global illumination, operation gain, and magnetic fields. These findings are critical for ensuring the reliable operation of the MCP-PMTs under the high-luminosity conditions expected at the PANDA experiment.
