Carinated artifacts are found in all sites of the Swabian Aurignacian. Since the first
discovery of Aurignacian horizons at Sirgenstein by R. R. Schmidt in 1906 these
artifacts are well known in the region. We conducted a reassessment of the site of
Vogelherd and the reassessment of Geißenklösterle is still ongoing. Both sites yielded
carinated artifacts that enable the discussion of this artifact type. Our research tackles
the long-standing challenges posed by their typological ambiguity by integrating usewear
analysis with refitting studies. We try to resolve the question of function of these
artifacts by combining use-wear analysis with refits to gain more detailed insights
into this find category. From both sites we could recover carinated end-scrapers with
refitted bladelets that enable a more detailed understanding of the chaîne opératoire of
these artifacts. The results of this analysis have significant implications for a broader
understanding of Aurignacian technology and assemblage variability across Europe.
