Abstract

The key to successful process optimization especially for industrial application of enzyme-catalyzed reactions is immobilization. Advantages of enzyme immobilization onto mesoporous supports are e.g. reduction of production costs by efficient recycling, enhancement of the operational stability and better control of process engineering. In this contribution, various studies on enzyme immobilization on ordered mesoporous solids and the essential properties of the resulting materials with respect to the envisaged applications are presented. Particular emphasis is placed on the fundamentals of the immobilization processes, the tailoring of a suitable support and the discussion of selected case studies with potential for industrial biocatalysis.
