Abstract

Background: Pathologies of the peroneal tendons are a rare reason for complaints in the lateral hindfoot but the frequency is typically underestimated. The vast majority of pathologies of the peroneal tendons are chronic degenerative diseases that are frequently overlooked. Aim of the paper: A short but comprehensive overview is given about the anatomy and typical pathologies of the peroneal tendons, diagnostics and treatment planning. There are 4 groups of pathologies: peroneal tendinitis, (partial) ruptures of the peroneal tendons, peroneal tendon instability and symptomatic os peroneum syndrome. Discussion: The treatment and correct diagnostics of pathologies of the peroneal tendons are complex. The treatment plan needs to be adjusted to the individual pathology of the patients. In many cases, conservative treatment is possible. Nevertheless, there are pathologies requiring primary surgical treatment.
