What do we gain from looking at numbers biographically? The idea of this focus section began with this open question rather than the axiom that biographic narratives are a powerful tool that serve to throw a spotlight on a numerical entity as the central character of a history of knowledge circulation and conceptual change. It reconsiders the sociohistorical dynamics of quantification by probing a novel approach to its global history, where the protagonists are the numbers themselves.
