Abstract

This paper evaluates the performance of User Equipment (UE)-side bistatic sensing, utilizing the Position Reference Signal (PRS). The study investigates the feasibility of using PRS for integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) in a highway entry scenario for automotive applications. A system model is presented in which a UE located in a vehicle on the slip road of the highway entry, along with a Base Station (BS) transmitting the PRS, employs a bistatic radar system. The BS shares the configuration of the PRS resources with the UE, enabling the UE to determine the angle of departure of the PRS resources. This system is used to observe the traffic on the highway and to estimate suitable gaps for entering the highway. Simulation results, obtained using the Simulation of Urban Mobility (SUMO) traffic simulation, analyse the False Alarm Rate (FAR) and the vehicle merge rate while varying the number of vehicles per hour (vph) on the highway. The findings demonstrate that excluding sections with a Line of Sight path between the UE and BS improves sensing performance, and that lower numbers of vph leads to better overall results.
