Abstract

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and digital technologies are reshaping the landscape of biomedical and psychological research. In particular, psychoneuroendocrinology (PNE) stands at an exciting juncture where novel technologies can revolutionize our understanding of the dynamic interactions among psychological processes, neuroendocrine functioning, and health outcomes. With digital tools offering the potential to achieve unprecedented ecological validity, scalability, and precision, PNE research has the opportunity to leverage these technologies to achieve groundbreaking insights.

Our traditional PNE methods, such as biomarkers measured in blood, saliva, or hair, have long been the basis for reliable stress assessments in controlled laboratory environments and field studies. However, even in field applications, such methods remain constrained by their discrete sampling nature, limited temporal resolution, and practical challenges in repeated or continuous collection. To address these limitations, digital and AI-driven solutions could offer powerful alternatives – enabling more continuous, unobtrusive, and scalable assessment of stress in real-world contexts. These approaches are already beginning to bridge the gap between laboratory precision and ecological applicability.
