Abstract

This study analyses trust as a social resource in the context of Islamic education at state schools. Based on qualitative-explorative research, the narratives of experts, teachers, and parents are analysed to determine whether Islamic religious education (IRE) is perceived as a medium of social integration. Drawing on Luhmann's systems theory, trust is seen as a central element in reducing social complexity. The results of the study suggest that a lack of transparency and significant state intervention on the part of Muslim actors, are seen as a 'signal' of scepticism. Especially in times of crisis, such as the period after 7 October 2023, a further destabilization of the relationship of trust between the Muslim community and the political system manifested itself. This study comes to the conclusion that trust acts as a social resource to overcome crisis situations and a lack of recognition.
