Abstract

In order to improve the performance of wet multi-disk clutches, beside optimization of friction lining and lubricants, new groove arrangements are being developed for transmission applications, for example scoop grooves in dual clutch transmissions. At the same time, the reduction of the cooling oil volume flow is in focus for reasons of energy efficiency, with functionality and durability of disk clutches being largely determined by their thermal household. Thus, insight into the thermal behavior is crucial not only in the friction phase but also in the cooling phase. Factors that influence the thermal-and especially the cooling properties are highly diverse and sometimes very complex: Beside part design and oil flow rate, the operation mode (operation as a brake or a regular clutch) and the design of grooves in the lining regarding flow capacity and heat transfer affect the cooling properties. These variables also provide important input variables for thermal simulations of wet running multi-plate clutches, making profound knowledge imperative to the precise calculation and evaluation of the temperature household and cooling properties. This paper investigates the influences on the cooling properties and the validation of input parameters by comparison of temperature measurements and temperature calculations. The heat transfer by cooling oil in the friction and the cooling phase of the load spectrum is determined for various clutch sizes, friction linings and groove patterns. In addition, the determinations of the flow capacity in static and dynamic measurements are presented and mechanisms such as the conveying effect of scoop grooves are explained.
