Abstract

Digitalization is understood as a driver of radical change. Generally, it is expected that economic activities increasingly and successfully migrate to digital markets. From the perspective of economic sociology such expectations seem questionable since digital markets are burdened with high uncertainty. This article employs the conception-of-control approach used by Fligstein (2001) alongside with the social-order-of-markets approach employed by Beckert (2009) to identify common patterns of digital market orders which serve as platform logic. According to this platform logic, organizations loosen traditionally tight couplings and become profiteers of digital markets, which they organize. As profiteers they charge fees for market transactions on digital platforms. The article develops an approach suitable for a sociological analysis of the forms and the consequences of digitization. For future research the article suggests a perspective of economic sociology that focuses on digital market orders as key drivers of change.
