For a prevention of early tool failure by wear in industrial practice of cold forging knowledge about wear behavior of coated tools is decisive. Thus, aim of this thesis is to develop a methodology for wear characterization of coated tools, which is based on a newly developed application-related wear test and a specifically developed approach for wear evaluation. Moreover, the methodology provides the basis for a load adjusted application of coatings. Tool costs are reduced considerably in companies by a specific enhancement of tool life.
