In daily gynecological practice, the relevant form of lymphedema is acquired through a damage to the lymphatic drainage system. This article provides an overview of the diagnosis, therapy and prevention of lymphedema based on the S2k guideline from 2017. The development of lymphedema can often be reduced by the careful choice of the procedure. During the follow-up examinations special attention should always be paid to the development of lymphedema. Once the diagnosis has been made, continuous therapy must be initiated, the complex physical decongestive therapy, which consists of a combination of skin care, manual lymphatic drainage, exercise and compression. The aim is to prevent progression and, if possible, to move the lymphedema to a lower stage.
