Abstract

Sexually transmitted infections (STI) pose a considerable risk for affected women. The frequently asymptomatic course of the disease, which does not protect against further spread and serious late consequences, means that their number in Germany is currently stagnating at a high level, if not even increasing in the case of individual entities. Effective reduction seems possible only through additional efforts in prevention, diagnosis and therapy. In gynecological practice, this is possible through increased patient education, targeted sexual histories, and risk-adapted diagnostics and therapy. The article presents current recommendations in this regard. Among others, the German guideline»Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) – Counselling, Diagnosis and Therapy«, the data of the first representative study»health and sexuality in Germany« (GeSiD) published in 2020 and the report on the health situation of women in Germany released by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in the same year are taken into account.
