Abstract

The 38 m deep and 55 m long pit cave Greidaloch (1272/05) has been discovered in 1994 in the northwestern part of the Estergebirge in the Bavarian Alps. The entrance at 1431 m a.s.l. is located 3 km SE of Murnau on the southern slope of the Buchrain and is developed along local NNE-SSW striking faults within folded carbonates of the Triassic Plattenkalk unit. Here, the survey of the cave is given together with a detailed description. At the deepest point, the bones of an adult male red deer (Cervus elaphus) have been found, along with bones of other vertebrates, notably the skull of a European Woodcock (Scolopax rusticola), and rests of a Common Hazelhen (Tetrastes bonasia). 14C-dating revealed an early Holocene age for the deer at 10.3 calibrated kiloyears before present (ka cal BP).
