In January 2017, the Joint Federal Committee added pulse oximetry screening for critical congenital heart defects to the scope of U1/U2 screening as a new screening for newborns. With a positive pulse oximetry screening, every fourth to fifth child is expected to have a ductus-dependent heart defect. This article describes the cardiac defects that may be conspicuous in pulse oximetry screening and their pathophysiological effects.
