Abstract

For the first time, this work presents simultaneous tomographic measurements combining time-resolved laser-induced incandescence (TiRe-LII) and 2-color-pyrometry (2CP) for the characterization of soot particles (particle size, volume fraction and temperature) in turbulent flames on a single-shot basis. To this end, a tomographic approach based on an imaging fiber bundle with multiple inputs (allowing for different viewing angles) is used for 2CP and TiRe-LII. Four cameras in total allow for the acquisition of the required two simultaneous images for temperature and soot volume fraction measurements by 2CP, while the other two cameras are delayed to capture the following LII-signal for primary particle sizing, induced by an expanded pulsed laser beam. From each camera image (containing eight views each), a 3D-data cube is reconstructed and data is evaluated on a voxel basis (voxel size 200 × 200 × 200 µm³). For validation of the single-shot technique, first the laminar diffusion flame of a Gülder burner is characterized. Second, the slightly turbulent flame (Re ≈ 3.6·10³) from a tube-burner (Geitlinger-type) is investigated. The results from the Gülder flame demonstrates the feasibility of the approach, not only for averaged, but also for single-shot data, agreeing well with data from the literature. From the 3D-reconstructions of the turbulent flame, flame structure can be assessed. Additionally, correlations of temperature, soot concentration and particle size are extracted and results are compared to literature data.
