Abstract

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma, a subtype of nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) and actinic keratosis have been recognized as occupational diseases since 2015. In particular, people who work outdoors are at an increased risk of developing NMSC; however, it is still unclear what knowledge they have about NMSC. Method: As part of a nationwide representative survey (8th wave of the National Cancer Aid Monitoring), the terms used in relation to NMSC and possible signs of NMSC were investigated. The knowledge of outdoor workers and the general population was compared. In addition, the knowledge of outdoor workers was analyzed in detail according to sociodemographic and skin-specific characteristics. Results: Colloquial terms such as white skin cancer were more familiar than medical terms such as squamous cell carcinoma among both outdoor workers and the general population. While there were no differences between outdoor workers and the general population regarding knowledge of the terms, outdoor workers seemed to be more familiar with the possible signs of NMSC. In particular, younger age, immigrant background, fair skin type and more than 40 moles on the body were associated with a higher knowledge score. Discussion: Despite the higher risk of developing NMSC, outdoor workers have only a small advantage in knowledge compared to the general population. Further education seems necessary in both groups, not least to support adequate self-examination of the skin and to raise awareness for better implementation of sun protection measures by the outdoor workers themselves and also by their employers.
