Abstract

The value of data in healthcare is increasing rapidly due to the latest technological advances which support the collection and processing of large volumes of data. This raises the question of data ownership – who the data owner is and what constitutes ownership. As a result, new data governance models are emerging. In this chapter, we give an overview of the latest academic discourse on health data ownership. We further present the emerging data governance models, define them, discuss their characteristics, and if and how they have been applied in the healthcare sector. Our findings show that the most promising health data governance models are data trusts.
