Abstract

A well-established alternative is revitalization, which involves inducing bleeding into the root canal to form a blood clot that acts as a biological matrix for tissue formation. Although revitalization has shown promising clinical results, it is considered a biological repair rather than true pulp regeneration because the resulting tissue may not fully resemble the original pulp. To advance the field, researchers are exploring innovative cell-based and primarily cell-free methods for endodontic tissue engineering. Cell-based techniques involve the transplantation of cells, while primarily cell-free approaches aim to attract endogenous stem or progenitor cells into the root canal using scaffolds and signalling molecules. These emerging approaches have the potential to overcome biological limitations and enable reproducible pulp regeneration, opening up exciting possibilities for the future of endodontics.
