Abstract

This book chapter puts helical nanographenes under the spotlight. The appealing combination of chirality and extended conjugation of these purely organic molecular designs makes them promising candidates for optoelectronic applications. Herein, the optical properties of nanographenes presenting helical motifs, both achiral/racemic and enantioenriched/enantiopure samples, have been taken into account. Besides, based on the elemental composition of their cores, examples were sorted in purely carbonated and heteroatom-doped helical nanographenes. Furthermore, a comparison at both structural and properties level was made between simple and multiple laterally-extended helicenes, paying special attention to species with non-hexagonal rings in their structures. Discussion briefly alludes to synthetic aspects, mentioning their most relevant structural features, and highlighting their chiroptical properties. These last two aspects were compiled in a table at the end of the chapter including commonly employed chirality descriptors along with structural parameters.
