Abstract

An integrated energy management concept for residential areas using energy packages is presented. Renewable energy sources and sector coupling consumers (e.g. electric cars and heat pumps) will change the transport of energy fundamentally. The present limit of the transport capacity of the electrical power grid does not meet the future demands and broad outages might occur. Consequently, novel solutions to operate the grid have to be developed. The proposed solution avoids grid expansion and establishes a novel grid operation philosophy with energy packages based on power electronics and storage devices. Beyond that, energy packages allow to generalize the task of transferring energy by using multiple energy carriers, e.g. liquid organic hydrogen carriers. Theoretical considerations are presented and validated via RMS simulations in MATLAB/Simulink. Introduced key variables quantify the benefits of energy packages.
