Spiral CT angiography (CTA) is a relatively new volumetric or truly three-dimensional approach to vascular imaging, but it also makes use of older and known techniques. This chapter presents the basic and common features of all CTA techniques, includes information on practical aspects such as contrast medium application, discusses image quality aspects in detail, and gives an overview of clinical applications. Spiral CT allows continuous volume data acquisition instead of the traditional way of scanning slice by slice successively. It was presented for the first time in 1989 and has gained a dominant role since then. When spiral CT was introduced, there was a lot of concern that image quality might be impaired due to moving the patient and the resulting non-planar scan geometry. A CTA examination is, in most cases, preceded by a standard CT examination without contrast medium application.
