Abstract

The prognostic impact of microsurgical tumor resection in malignant gliomas is still a matter of discussion. Several retrospective but mostly single-center studies have reported a favorable prognostic impact of gross-total tumor resection in glioblastomas (GBM) but there are only few randomized controlled clinical trials with a prospective design on this issue. Different technical approaches have been attempted within the past years aiming to support the neurosurgeon to achieve safer and higher resection rates in malignant glioma surgery. This chapter will give an overview about the most widely used intraoperative neurosurgical techniques in glioma surgery and their impact on extent of resection, safety and prognostic outcome in GBM patients.
