Abstract

The chapter draws on the Deleuzian concepts of assemblage and machinism as well as on New Materialist conceptualizations of identity to explore how, in the context of intercultural and interreligious dialogue, religious differences and identities emerge in and through an affective interplay of bodies, practices, emotions and things. The chapter shows how culturalized and ‘religionized’ differences surface in affective assemblages of dialogue that are imbued with different kinds of ‘forces’ (E. Grosz): forces that strive for differentiation and give spaces for culturalist hierarchies, but also forces that induce a movement of bodies towards each other, dissolving differences. These perspectives will be explored through a case study in a German city that brings an analysis of a museum exhibition on local Muslim life. This exhibition was articulated as part of local interreligious dialogue and attempted to make everyday Muslim life tangible through various material techniques (photography, biographical representations, audio stations). The chapter reconstructs the exhibition as a dynamic assemblage, entangled in power relations, in and through which differences are articulated. It argues that an attunement to the (re-)materializations of identities and differences in affective assemblages can foster a better understanding of the ways identities and differences are operating.
