Abstract

Background: The advances in digitalization and information processing are also influencing interventional medicine. Adapting to this development will be a central challenge of modern (oncological) surgery in order to be able to continue to offer optimized therapeutic procedures. Objective and Conclusion: With respect to the technological developments within and outside of medicine, we propose a “Surgery 4.0”, which places special emphasis on the collection, processing and analysis of perioperative data in order to make interventions more efficient and safer by means of intelligent assistance systems. To this end we examine the three operative phases of planning, implementation and posttreatment with respect to their impact on data generation, as well as possible applications for context-sensitive mechatronics or software-based support systems.
