Abstract

We introduce the concept of differential positioning to increase the accuracy of indoor position estimation using ultra-wideband (UWB) time of arrival (TOA) signals. Knowledge about common errors can be learned by employment of a reference source, where the difference between its known and estimated position (differential operation in solution domain), or the difference between the known and measured ranges (differential operation in measurement domain), provides useful information to reduce the error in estimating the position of the target source. Simulation results confirm the superiority of differential operation over traditional non-differential methods. © 2013 IEEE.
