An environmental-friendly, economical, and easy to fabricate hybrid inhibitor of Tragacanth Gum (TG) and Ceftriaxone (Cef) is introduced for corrosion prevention of mild steel in HCl solution. A thorough experimental characterization of the inhibitors and their interactions with the mild steel is performed by a combination of Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy analysis. Electrochemical measurements are utilized to determine the optimum concentration of TG, Cef, and TG-Cef hybrid systems with the highest corrosion protection efficiency. The inhibition efficiency of TG, Cef, and TG-Cef at their optimum concentration (600, 400, and 250 ppm) are 92%, 94%, and 98%, respectively. The TG-Cef hybrid system exhibits the highest corrosion protection efficiency at the lowest concentration, indicating the synergic effect in the TG-Cef hybrid system for the corrosion protection of mild steel. The impact of temperature on the corrosion inhibition of TG-Cef is also studied in the 298–328 K range, revealing a decreasing trend in the corrosion inhibition efficiency of TG-Cef with increasing temperature. The adsorption mechanism and most stable adsorption configuration in each system are determined using quantum chemical calculation and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation indicating both physisorption and chemisorption of the inhibitors.
