Abstract

Amongst current grammatical theories Valency Grammar is the most prominent – perhaps the
only one – that has been widely adopted in the context of teaching German as a foreign language.
Nevertheless, teaching materials, though claiming a valency-theoretic approach, nowadays
mostly show a very reduced version. Besides, the postulated superiority of valency grammar in
foreign language teaching has never been empirically proved. Therefore, data from learner productions
can provide evidence. In this paper I present data from learner corpora, showing that
errors occurring in learner language can’t be properly explained nor prevented by valency grammar.
The conclusion is that valency grammar in learner-contexts should be abandoned. Alternatives
are discussed.
