Abstract

Although a rare incident, cancer in pregnant women is still the major cause of death during reproductive age. The most frequent tumors in pregnancy are cervix and breast carcinomas. Ambivalent needs - maternal oncological risks versus fetal threat - demand individual solutions. In selected cases iatrogenic preterm delivery is needed to allow prompt maternal treatment. The hope for a successful pregnancy and delivery after cancer treatment leads to questions concerning fertility, the effect of fertility preserving strategies, teratogenic effects of the therapeutic agents (radiation, chemotherapy) on the fetus as well as the impact of future pregnancies on the oncological long-term prognosis. Cancer in pregnancy always means a multidisciplinary medical and ethical challenge. Along similar lines to cancer in non-pregnant patients early diagnosis and adequate therapy are the major influencing variables. © 2009 Springer Medizin Verlag.
