Abstract

Competency-based teaching has evolved into a key concept in teaching – also in religious education. This paper provides an outline of the educational structures and criteria for shaping teaching and learning processes in Islamic religious edu- cation that may embrace the competency-based paradigm and even transcend it. In light of the criticism that competence orientation has a limited understanding of education, special attention was paid to the totality of the human personality in developing educational principles. With this in mind, the educational structures and criteria for Islamic religious education presented in this paper seek to address the learner’s personality in its entirety and to support the education of young peo- ple in all dimensions. Following a presentation of the theoretical foundations and objectives of competence orientation, the foundations of religious education are described for the competency-based educational building blocks for Islamic reli- gious education outlined in the last section of the paper.
