A recently proposed equation for predicting the Young's modulus of elasticity of two-phase materials has been applied to the case of cast-iron containing graphite inclusions. The effect of graphite volume fraction, axial ratio and orientation on the Young's modulus can be assessed by using the equation. The calculated values were compared with experimental data drawn from the literature for cast-irons with varying axial ratios of the graphite inclusions. Good agreement between experimental and calculated values was found. The equation contains no fitting parameters, and is therefore of great practical importance for the Young's modulus prediction in these materials.
