Aim: The electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) is a relatively new product which has recently been the subject of aggressive advertising campaigns in Germany. This paper presents representative data on the recognition and use of e-cigarettes and the associated perception of risk among the German population. Sample group and methods: Data collection for the "PrevEND Study I" (PRE-Venting the Use of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems - Study, Part 1) presented here was carried out between July and October 2014 by the international field research institute IFF International GmbH, Biberach. A total of 1,015 people aged between 16 and 75 were questioned by trained interviewers in a nationwide telephone survey. Results: The vast majority of participants knew what an e-cigarette was (79.6%). 8.2% of participants had used an e-cigarette at least once in their lives. The younger participants were more likely to have heard of e-cigarettes and to have tried them than their older compatriots. The e-cigarette was less well-known among participants with lower incomes than among those with higher incomes. The majority of participants (67.6%) believed that the e-cigarette posed health risks. The most commonly mentioned health issues associated with the use of e-cigarettes were the risks of respiratory tract irritation (71.8%) and addiction (69.6%). Conclusions: The epidemiological data presented here suggest that the majority of Germans know what e-cigarettes are. The increasing prevalence of e-cigarettes and initial findings about the health risks posed by their use highlight the increasing importance of this consumer product for the fields of occupational, social and environmental medicine.
