Abstract

This contribution presents preliminary results from training excavations of the Institute for Pre- and Protohistory of the Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg in cooperation with the Nuremberg Natural History Society, funded by the Landesamt für Denkmalpflege. The cemetery presented here is situated near a small village called Sankt Helena, approximately 40 kilometres north-east of Nuremberg. After giving a short description of the site, some important objects from the excavations are discussed. In mound 2, approximately 19 m in diameter, an inhumation burial of a man with an iron sword, an amber ring and bronze pins was excavated. Further fnds consist mainly of large numbers of small bronze knobs used for decorating wooden objects or other organic material, e.g. leather. Mounds 3 and 4 also contained inhumation burials. Pottery and small bronze pins were included as grave goods. Burials 2, 3 and 4 date to the Hallstatt C1 phase, whereas mound 1 contained the burial of a woman with an amber pearl necklace, neck and arm rings dated to Hallstatt D1.
