Abstract

The demographic shift with the increase towards older people and the increase in chronic diseases as well as the progress of medicine leads to more geriatric patients in all care levels. This development creates new challenges for medical care and management of patients in old age. The immune system is also functionally changed as part of the physiological aging process. Based on the age-physiologically reduced functional reserve, the risk of an infection-related disease increases significantly. Infectious diseases have a high morbidity and mortality in geriatric patients and are a major cause of death. Above all, diarrheal diseases, cholecystitis and diverticulitis, as well as infections with Clostridioides difficile are of gastroenterological importance. It is important to know that the presentation of infections is usually atypical in old age and the course is more severe than in younger adults.
