Compared to transition metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation, which is over half a century old, hydrosilylation with s-block metal catalysts is still in its infancy. The strong differences between transition metal complexes and highly polar early main group organometallics are reflected in their divergent hydrosilylation chemistry. A major advantage of alkene hydrosilylation with group 2 metal catalysts is their very high selectivity for the Markovnikov products. The possibility to steer the regioselectivity either by solvent or metal choice is unique to the early main group metals. Starting with a short outline of hydrosilylation catalysis in general, a critical review of early main group metal-catalyzed hydrosilylation of C-C, C-O, and C-N bonds is given and mechanistic details are discussed. These pioneering studies in s-block hydrosilylation catalysis clearly demonstrate that this field is not competitive to transition metal catalysis but rather complements this important research area.
