s-Block metals play an important role in polymerization catalysis. Although often defined as anionic polymerization, the nature of the metal can have a substantial effect on the microstructure of the polymer defined by chain length and stereoregularity. Especially, the highly charged group 2 cations are sufficiently Lewis acidic to control polymerization by metal–monomer interactions. Progress in the use of early main group metal catalysts and initiators for polymerization of activated alkenes (styrene, butadiene, isoprene, and modified styrenes) and polar monomers (lactides and epoxide/CO2) is described with a special emphasis on mechanistic understanding.
