This paper presents a generalized dynamic phasor model of a modular multilevel converter (MMC) that is easily extendable to any number of harmonics. One of the main drawbacks of the dynamic phasor theory is the difficulty associated with the extension of the models. This issue is tackled by defining a novel mathematical framework. Using a newly defined arithmetic operation, the equations describing the MMC model in the stationary abc frame can easily be transformed into the dq frame for an arbitrary number of harmonic frequencies. The proposed non-linear model is implemented in Matlab/Simulink® and its accuracy is verified against an averaged EMT model of an MMC.
