This pilot study investigated the breadth of childhood trauma exposure in treatment-seeking patients with buying-shopping disorder {n = 97) compared to patients with gambling disorder (n = 44), alcohol use disorder (n = 47) and consecutive inpatients with other mental health disorders (n = 93). All patients answered the German version of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Questionnaire (ACE-D). The results indicate a high level of ACEs in all four groups, which is higher than in population-based samples. There were no significant group differences in the mean number of reported ACE categories. It appears that exposure to childhood trauma is an unspecific rather than a specific risk factor for buying-shopping disorder. The results should be taken into consideration regarding treatment approaches.
