In this paper, we develop a new class of distributed space-time trellis codes (DSTTCs). These DSTTCs are designed for wireless networks which have a large set of nodes N but at any given time only a small, a priori unknown subset of nodes S -N can be active. Each node is equipped with a unique signature vector but all active nodes use the same STTC for encoding. Efficient methods for the optimization of the set of signature vectors are provided and it is shown that existing full-rank STTCs designed for Nc ≥ 2 co-located antennas are favorable choices for the trellis encoding. If properly designed, the proposed DSTTCs achieve a diversity order of d = min{Nc, NS} if NS nodes are active. Furthermore, the decoding complexity of the proposed DSTTCs is independent of the number of nodes and identical to that of the underlying STTC. Simulation results show the superior performance of the novel DSTTC compared to distributed space-time filtering.
