In his lecture On the Painting Poem Thomas Kling claims that the terms for both pictural and scriptural
signs originated from the semantic field of the sullied and impure. He interpretes this as archaic basis
for poetic strategies of demarcation using sociolects. Kling develops his idea in regard to Stefan George’s
The Witches’ Round Dance. Thus his own cycle of poems The Witches becomes accessible. It is composed
as a poetic triptych, centred around a poem on a woodcut by Hans Baldung Grien. Using etymological
ambivalences, effects of intermediality and polyphony, Kling creates „multiple exposures“ of his picture
sources and his own text, understanding the latter as „synchronisation“ of image sources.
