The design of efficient manufacturing processes requires the development and use of accurate process models. Using an established macroscale model, a new microscale bending model is proposed. For macroscale (fine grained) material undergoing bending the surface regions experience severe strain while the interior sections suffer less straining because the grain boundaries inhibit the dislocation motion. For the microscale (coarse grained specimens) there are fewer grain boundaries in the interior of the specimen therefore the dislocations can more easily and uniformly penetrate into the interior leading to an increased deformation in the interior section of the specimen. This therefore means that there is a smaller but more linear strain gradient from the surface to the neutral axis of the specimen. The new model accounts for some of these size effects by assuming a linear strain distribution through the specimen thickness, and a flow stress that is a function of the grain size. Using a flanging operation, with CuZn15 specimens that were 0.1 mm, 0.25 mm and 0.5 mm thick with varying numbers of grains through the thickness, this new analytical model was verified to more accurately predict the peak force in a microbending operation as compared to the established macroscale models.
