Surgeons have been dealing with rib fractures and their adequate therapy for a long time. Severe pain and possible respiratory insufficiency are immediate risks, remaining deformities are long-term complications, especially in the context of multiple fractures series. Surgical stabilization of rib fractures is indicated for higher-grade instability associated with respiratory failure, persistent deformity, persistent instability, prolonged pain, lack of rib consolidation, and thoracot-omy for other indications, e.g., in the context of surgical intrathoracic injuries such as lung injuries, pneumothorax, or hematothorax. Locked plates are most commonly used for osteosynthesis, with good results and high patient safety. Muscle-sparing, limited access routes with reduced invasiveness have become established, whereas thoracoscopic-assisted procedures are less frequently performed.
