Abstract

The establishment of medical networks has recently gained momentum in health care policy. However, many questions regarding this topic still remain unanswered, including how exactly the terms "supply network" and "network" are defined, and the relevance of such structures in current oncological care in Germany is vague. This manuscript is based on selective literature research in different databases using the search term "networks of medical facilities in oncology". Searching the Internet with the term "supply network" mainly delivers hits related to supply of electricity. Searching for an exact definition of oncological supply networks is largely unfruitful, even when concrete search terms are used. If less vague statements on oncological networks are found, these vary greatly depending on the context. We present an extensive description of the adoption and significance of networking among oncological facilities in the German public health sector. Moreover, the legal requirements as well as future development opportunities of health care services within oncological networks are characterized.
