Images and movies are an important aspect of our life as they transport stories and emotions. The image acquisition in a camera plays a major role as many decisions are made during recording whereas a correction afterward is often impossible. Thus, an image needs to be captured right in the first place - otherwise a unique moment might be gone forever.
This work analyzes the image acquisition process in digital cameras and shows a complete model of the conversions that take place. The influence of spatial and temporal sampling as well as image noise are discussed. Furthermore, the limitations from noise and dynamic range are analyzed and optimized. Finally, the camera enhancement by non-regular sub-sampling is demonstrated. In all aspects, various camera improvements are shown.
