Abstract

This paper describes a voltage controlled oscillator optimized for application in a local positioning system. Instead of the traditional VCO topologies an improved version of the Colpitts-oscillator in common-gate configuration has been built. The VCO has a very good figure of merit of -186 dBc/Hz. It has a center frequency of 6.1 GHz and the measured phase-noise is -117 dBc/Hz at an offset frequency of 1 MHz. The power consumption of the presented VCO is only 5 mW.
