Within the reader research there are just a few surveys about the reading habits of elderly people. Especially the usage of digital books has not been analyzed so far. Because of this desideratum, the master’s thesis Das Leseverhalten von Senioren discusses as one of the first papers how the elderly use books. After a theoretical approach to this target group with reference to theories from the media studies, the empirical part of the paper is based on three research questions: How can the usage of books in the current phase of life be described? How has the reading of books developed in the elderly’s lifetime? Which chances and barriers can be found concerning e-books? The study uses qualitative methods; after holding a guided interview with 12 participants, the data was interpreted with a qualitative content analysis. The results show that especially nonfictional literature is important to elderly people. Upon retirement, some have more time to read but in general most participants have read books constantly during their life without interrupting anyway. Only a bad state of health which does not allow the usage of books any more can be responsible for an ultimate stop to reading. Elderly people know about the advantages of e-books, but at the moment barriers still exist. A reason for the hesitant usage consists in the elderly’s media socialization before the introduction of the digitalization. The results may not be representative but there was made a first impulse for the reader research of the elderly.
