Mesophase carbon powder is an excellent precursor material for the production of fine grained graphite with superior mechanical properties and excellent tribological behaviour. To provide a net shape technique for complex as well as thick-walled carbon parts, a powder injection moulding (PIM) process has been developed, making use of a water-based binder system. It was found that the drying shrinkage prior to the thermal processing is the major densification step during the whole process as the mesophase carbon powder shows no sintering in the literal sense. In this work the binder composition is systematically varied and the effect of agar and additive concentration on the denstity of green and sintered samples is investigated. Furthermore the shrinkage of samples with an optimized binder composition is investigated and the fatigue strength is determined.
