Designing of ultrastrong materials that have relatively low weight to be used in space applications is discussed. Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) are suitable for such application because of their exceptional mechanical properties. However, severe structural inhomogeneity result in the premature failure of hybrid SWNT/polymer materials. It has been found that a sequential layering of chemically-modified nanotubes and polyelectrolytes can greatly reduce the phase segregation and render SWNT composites highly homogeneous.
